Hendricks County Tox-Away Days 2020

March 3, 2020 By Becky Trowbridge

Did you know that Americans generate an estimated 1.6 million tons of household hazardous waste (HHW) each year?

What is HHW?

HHW includes common household chemicals and substances such as oil-based paints, pool chemicals, and pesticides. Any empty containers are safe to be disposed of in the normal trash, but if you have any partially-used containers to dispose of, bring them to the next Hendricks County Solid Waste Management District’s Tox-Away Day event.

HCSWMD notes that the use of caution words such as “warning”, “toxic”, and “flammable” is a good indication that the item should be treated as HHW when it time to dispose of it.

Hendricks County Tox-Away Dates 2020

  • April 4, 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Brownsburg High School
  • May 16, 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Hendricks County Fairgrounds
  • July 11, 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Hickory Elementary School in Avon
  • September 19, 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Hendricks County Fairgrounds
  • October 10, 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Plainfield Middle School

Open to Hendricks County Residents

Hendricks County residents can participate in Tox-Away Day events to dispose of HHW and other items, such as tires, electronics, and appliances. All HHW is accepted from households free of charge. There are fees associated with recycling televisions, appliances, and tires (over a certain number). Regulations limit the Tox-Away Day events to households only–no business, schools, or organizations can participate.

These items should not be brought to Tox-Away Day: latex paint, motor oil, alkaline batteries, lab chemicals, firearms, infectious wastes, asbestos, explosives, ammunition, and radioactive material.
