As the weather gets colder and harvest season comes to a close, some members of our community struggle to put food on the table each day. To help these individuals, the Hendricks County Food Pantry Coalition was established in 2006.
The Coalition works to help Hendricks County food pantries collaborate to ensure that the basic nutritional needs of residents in the community are met. It also provides training and education to the affiliated food pantries to help make sure that they are as effective as possible.
The Hendricks County Food Pantry Coalition includes 23 food pantries, three pet food pantries, and one hygiene pantry. Last year, the Coalition was awarded a $6,500 grant by the Hendricks County Community Foundation to purchase refrigerators and other supplies for the pantries, allowing them to store fresh and frozen items.
Individuals are more like to struggle to provide food for their families during winter months, so donations are greatly appreciated. You can support the Hendricks County Food Pantry Coalition by donating food or funds to the organization or any of the member pantries.
Another way to support the Coalition is to attend the fourth annual Everyday Souperheros Cook Off on December 4th, 2016 from 1 to 3 p.m. The Cook Off will be held at the Hendricks County Fairgrounds Exposition Hall. It features a cooking competition between the Hendricks County police, fire, EMS, court systems, and dispatch staff. The winner of the competition receives the traveling trophy in addition to bragging rights!
Admission to the event is $1 per soup ticket or one canned good per soup ticket. These tickets can be exchanged for a bowl of soup or a cupcake. The event will also include live entertainment from a classic rock band. All proceeds will go to food pantries in Hendricks County. Find more information about the annual fundraising event here.
