Hendricks County Solid Waste Management District is offering five Tox-Away Days for Hendricks County residents in 2016. Just in time to kickstart your spring cleaning projects, the first T0x-Away Day will be held on April 9th at Brownsburg High School.
Tox-Away Day events give Hendricks County residents the opportunity to safely recycle or dispose of household hazardous wastes, unwanted medications, appliances, tires, electronics, computer components, and medical sharps. Due to regulations, business waste cannot be accepted at these events.
Here are a few examples of common household hazardous wastes that you may want to consider recycling this year:
- Pool chemicals
- Batteries
- Items that contain mercury
- Cleaners
- Antifreeze
To learn more about what qualifies as a household hazardous waste, check out the Hendricks County Solid Waste Management District’s website. Household hazardous waste will be collected free of charge. Tires, electronics, and some appliances may require small fees.
If you have latex paint to dispose, please do not bring it to Tox-Away Day for disposal. It is safe to dispose of with your regular household trash. However, it must be dried before it will be picked up. The Hendricks County Solid Waste Management District has provided a video that shows how to dry and dispose of latex paint.
The Hendricks County Substance Abuse Task Force is partnering with the District to collect unwanted medication free of charge during Tox-Away Day events. All types of medicine are accepted; the task force asks that you leave the medicine in the original container and ensure that the name and strength of the drug is readable. For prescription medication, make sure that the name of the pharmacy where it was filled is visible. You can black out or remove personal information from the containers.
All Tox-Away Day events are held from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on their respective dates. These events are only open to Hendricks County residents. The 2016 Tox-Away Day dates are:
