The Hendricks County Solid Waste Management District is offering five Tox-Away Days in 2015. Tox-Away Days give Hendricks County residents a chance to recycle or dispose of household hazardous wastes, medical sharps, tires, appliances, unwanted medications, electronics, and computer components in a safe and environmentally friendly way.
Hendricks County Tox-Away Days are only open to Hendricks County residents. Businesses may not participate due to regulations.
Hendricks County Solid Waste Management District’s Executive Director, Lenn Detwiler, recently stated, “Tox-Away Days continue to be very popular and well-utilized. Last year over 3,300 participants came through the five events and we collected nearly 300,000 pounds of material. Residents seem to really appreciate what we do through our Tox-Away program and they continue to respond.”
Examples of common household hazardous wastes include:
- cleaners
- antifreeze
- herbicides
- oil-based paints and stians
- pool chemicals
- pesticides
- fluorescent light bulbs (including CFLs)
- items that contain mercury
- fuels
- batteries
- medical sharps
- adhesives
Tox-Away Days will accept all household hazardous wastes free of charge. The waste will be recycled if possible or disposed of in an environmentally responsible fashion. Please do not bring latex paint to Tox-Away Day; because it is water-based, it can safely be disposed of with normal household trash.
The District is partnering with the Hendricks County Substance Abuse Task Force once again to collect unwanted medications free of charge. All types of medications are accepted. If you bring medicine to be disposed of, please leave the drugs in their original containers. Make sure that the name and strength of the drug is readable as well as the name of the pharmacy where it was filled in the case of prescription medicines. Personal information may be blacked out or removed from the containers.
Tires and appliances will also be accepted. Some fees could apply depending upon the number and type of items. More information is available by calling the District office at (317) 858-6070. You can also learn more at HendricksSolidWaste.com.
